Meta’s Threads App Meets the Fediverse

The internet is about to get a lot bigger.

Welcome to The Fediverse

The Fediverse is an online ecosystem where social media users can interact with each other as if they were on a single social network.

Short for "federated universe”, The Fediverse (or “Fedi”) is essentially a network of social media servers that can communicate with each other. Each server operates independently but can talk to other servers as long as they run on the same protocol.

Meta Thread App will change the Fediverse.

"The fediverse is a collection of community-owned, ad-free, decentralized, and privacy-centric social networks. It's a growing community where users can experience the web as it was meant to be."

Introducing ActivityPub

ActivityPub, an open social networking protocol within Fedi, allows people to interact and view each other's content regardless of which sites and services they use.

Currently, most social media platforms are run by a single company, meaning users can only share with those who have also joined that service. Users of social networks supporting the ActivityPub protocol can essentially move their digital identity from one service to another without creating an account for each shared resource. They can exchange messages, share content, etc. Posted content is federated - once a network picks up your content, it can pass it to another network, and so on.

Then There was Meta

Threads, Meta's new Instagram spin-off, already has 100 million users and is headed to the Fediverse.

Meta recently announced plans to make Threads compatible with "ActivityPub, the open, social networking protocol that we believe can shape the future of the internet."

"Threads offers a new, separate space for real-time updates and public conversations… Our vision is to take what Instagram does best and expand that to text, creating a positive and creative space to express your ideas."

- Meta

Facebook: The Sequel?

Users log in to Threads through their Instagram account; posts can be up to 500 characters long and include links, photos, and videos up to 5 minutes in length. They can share a Threads post to their Instagram story, or as a link on any other platform.
